Joaquin Fraga Hernandez

I am currently working for the Sierra Nevada Research Institute at UC Merced as an Assistant Research Specialist. My work focuses on quantifying snowpack levels and runoff in the Sierra Nevadas. I graduated from the University of California, Merced (UC Merced) in December of 2019 with a B.S. in Earth System Science. I want to go to grad school and receive a master's or Ph.D. in water resources/water resource management, hydrology, or environmental engineering. Growing up as an immigrant and becoming a first-generation college graduate I struggled and at times continue to struggle with the lack of resources I had at my disposal compared to my peers. Although, I am proud of the hard work I put in to get to where I am. I also want to give back and help others achieve their goals. I did not have role models within my field to look up to but rather have been trying to be someone others can look up to and say "If he did it then so can I." I want to help build a community of Latinx in STEM. I am grateful to SOLESS for providing this community for us Latinx in STEM.
